Concussion

Concussion Sports Injury

A concussion is an injury to the brain and occurs when the brain is shaken inside the skull due to a forceful impact to the head. This can occur from a direct hit to the head or neck and can occur with whiplash injuries. Most symptoms of a concussion resolve within 7 to 10 days, however if they persist for longer than 3 weeks it is often termed post-concussion syndrome (PCS). The most common symptoms include headache, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty with concentration, insomnia, nausea and fatigue.

Our physiotherapists have been trained in concussion assessment and treatment for many of the symptoms related to a concussion. Using standardized tests we will assess neck mobility, balance, cognition, and comprehension. Treatment is most often centered on neck mobility, stability and muscle imbalances, as well as the vestibular (balance) system. The vestibular system is responsible for keeping your eyes focused when moving, sensing head and neck movement and helps you to keep your balance. An individualized treatment plan will be devised and will include proper progressions that will facilitate your return to sport or activity.

If you are concerned about future or potential concussions for yourself or child due to involvement in a contact sport, we also provide assessments for baseline scores. If a concussion occurs, we can use the re-test scores and compare them to baseline to determine if any/where deficits exist.
